I was introduced to Ella Fielding at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show this year as she had created the wonderful timber sculptures for the Plant Heritage stand.  My friend and fellow garden designer, Selina Botham, designed the stand and she worked with Ella to bring her initial ideas to life.  The judges awarded them a Silver-Gilt Flora medal.

Ella discovered chainsaw carving when she was at college, studying for a degree in Sculpture.  She is based in Surrey, but creates wooden sculptures all over the UK.  As well as working on her own commissions, she is also part of a collective called ‘The Tree Pirates’ who produce work for festivals, schools, local authorities and private clients.

Some of her work is amazing.  I love what she’s done with these old tree trunks…

As well as working with old rooted trees, Ella also creates sculptures from wood that she either supplies or are already on site.  The chairs below I think are fabulous – art and seating all in one.

There are lots more examples of Ella’s work on her website so do pop over and have a look if you’re interested to learn more.  I will certainly be keeping her in mind for future projects.
