Sutton garden under construction week 3

0 Written by Lisa on 1st Dec 2011 in From the drawing board

I made a site visit to my project in Sutton yesterday and it’s really starting to take shape now…

As you can see, the paving has been laid and the base for the decking area at the end of the garden is also done.  Eventually, the fence at the end of the garden will be painted black which will make it disappear, especially when the plants go in next Spring.

The posts each side of the garden have been installed ready for the contemporary trellis panels which are currently being made up off site by English Garden Joinery and should be ready for delivery and installation towards the end of next week.  By then, the terrace should have been pointed and the beds cleared of excess soil ready for planting.

I also delivered the trees to site today and you can just see one of them on the left of this picture.  We have gone for multistem Chinese Red Birch (Betula albosinensis var. septentrionalis) which has gorgeous amber-pink bark that looks fabulous in Winter when the light catches it.  Because this garden will mostly be viewed from the 1st floor we plan to install some uplighters in the trees and at other strategic points in the garden so that it will be connected to the internal living space.

The front garden is now underway too.  The old tarmac driveway has been removed from site, the new threshold step has been constructed and ground works are being carried out to widen the driveway.  If the weather remains on our side, all the hard landscaping should be finished by mid-December.

I had to go to Wisley yesterday afternoon so whilst I was there I decided to wiz round and see what was looking good.  Many of the perennials have been cut down and tidied up but many of the roses in the new rose garden were still in bloom and looking quite lovely.  I thought you might like to see the pictures I took  and I hope they brighten up your day! I made a site visit to my project in London last week which is starting to come together now.  If you remember, I was asked to redesign the terrace area following a house building project.  We’re now in week 4 of the construction phase of the project and I’m due to go in next week to plant – fingers crossed this mild weather continues for a bit longer! Design Inspiration – Walls

0 Written by Lisa on 10th Nov 2011 in Inspiration

I often find design inspiration when I’m out and about.  Noticing hard landscaping elements is definitely an occupational hazard and normally at some point when I’m away on holiday there’ll be something I just have to take a picture of for future reference. Read more

Working in Leeds Part 1- A “Garden Designer in Your Home” project

A few weeks ago I was contacted by a couple in Leeds.  Although they had recently had their garden redesigned they just didn’t feel that the design reflected the brief they had given.  They decided that the best course of action was to try and work through a new design themselves but just didn’t know where to start.  During an internet search for paving, they stumbled across my blog and website and realised quite quickly that I am very passionate about working with my clients to create a garden that fits in with their personal style and requirements. From the Drawing Board: Choosing the materials for the garden in Sutton

0 Written by Lisa on 26th Oct 2011 in Design Tips, From the drawing board

Part of the design process is to produce a full set of working drawings and a Scope of Works which not only enables the landscaper to accurately quote to build the garden, but also communicates the design in detail so that it can be brought to life as intended.  Within the Scope of Works it is the designer’s responsibility to source and specify the materials to be used and last week I spent time sourcing these for my project in Sutton.  Read more

I know, I know, I have already showed you a concept design and sketches this week for a garden in Sutton, but I wanted to show you the sketches I put together for a garden in Cobham as it’s a really exciting project and one that has been a little challenging to tie all together. Read more

From The Drawing Board: Concept Design and Sketches for Client in Sutton

0 Written by Lisa on 10th Oct 2011 in From the drawing board

Last week I presented a concept design and sketches to a client in Sutton.  Now that they have almost finished the redesign of their interior space, they wanted to look at the garden.  Because the only access to the back garden is through the house, they can’t put the hall flooring in until the garden has been finished so we are hoping to start the build before the end of October.
